The Black Swordsman Returns - Berserk Is Making a Comeback

Last year on May 6th, the world was shocked by the tragic news of Kentaro Miura's passing.

Miura, who was only 54, is most famous for being the creator of Berserk, one of the best dark fantasy mangas ever to see light. With volume 1 releasing way back in 1990, it comes as no surprise that Berserk & Miura are one of the most well-respected manga & mangaka.

At the time of his passing, many fans mourned his death, with thousands and thousands of readers expressing their grief on social media and almost every mangaka out there throwing in a tribute to him in their own works. Naturally, this meant that the future of Berserk, which has yet to see an end, was in the darkness. No one knew what was going to happen to it, and unfounded rumors were flying around the internet.

On 6/7, the fate of the manga was finally announced. Guts will be returning to the pages of Young Animal starting 6/24.

You might wonder, "how?". It was made clear that there would be a "successor" to the Miura, which at first might have you a bit skeptical. But the person taking over is Kouji Mori, a fellow renowned mangaka, and Miura's best friend. Most known for his manga Holyland, the two were best friends and Miura would often say that "we share the same brain so we are one". The two, who have been friends since high school, have supposedly helped each other on every single manga they have worked on.

Some 30 years ago, Mori was called in by Miura to help him on Berserk. Miura told Mori that he had to "do the eclipse", which Mori knew the importance of. From there, Mori was kept at Miura's for a week, and they came up with the entire Berserk storyline, which the manga has stayed true to all this time. Miura told Mori that he would be the only one who hears the entire Berserk plot, which is a huge responsibility, but also shows how much the two trusted each other.

If there is one person who can continue Berserk in this world, it is Kouji Mori. Along with Miura's trusted & skilled assistants, Berserk is set to continue in Young Animal volume 13, releasing 6/24 in Japan.
