The Indie-Rock Band Transforming our Generation One Song at a Time: Waater
When five childhood friends team up to break the fall of indie-rock music, a mission to reinvent the genre and bond it with the current generation is birthed. Meet Waater, the newest thrill of Tokyo’s music scene.
Native from Akita prefecture, Sion, Akiya, Kudo, Taisei, and Taiki joined their strengths in 2018 and formed their band, Waater. Instead of mourning the drop in popularity of indie rock in comparison to the ever-growing hip-hop industry, they decided to revive it in their own way. In homage to 70s punk, 80s new wave, and the essentials of 2000’s pop-punk, this band is the epitome of cool. However, under their moshpit-stirring, grunge look, Waater is a sensitive and profound group.
To them, rock is what you make of it. It goes beyond the rules of the past and should fuel a future for the upcoming artists and youth altogether. With this in mind, the band sources inspiration from all kinds of music, art, and literature, creating a sound unique to them. Melancholy, grief, and anger are deeply felt in their songs. Waater thinks that while it is important that their fans aggressively enjoy themselves at their live performances, they hope to break the shell of each person in order to create an honest and fluent future for rock and yonder.
Electrifying, blue-toned, and entrancing, the band does not fall short of talent. Their independent music videos capture their raw essence and approach when it comes to art direction and fashion. Their 2021 single SPIDER introduced Tokyo to their previous albums, Escapes, and Frozen.
Everyday life is not mundane for them. Transposing their little joys and anxieties in their songs, the highs and lows of youth are a foundation for their music. On top of that, they prefer to sell their used clothes over merchandise during concerts, because they believe in sharing their beliefs and true tastes through everything.
