Playing with the Elements: Kizen Zhao

Instagram has been long known for being a photography-focused platform, whether it be quick snaps on a phone or award-winning wildlife photography.

Through the maze of instantly curated feeds, and the incessant noise from notifications and uploads, only a few pictures stand out. It is the case for Kizen Zhao’s photography, which not only captivates right away but leaves a lasting aura of inspiration and serenity.

Born in the province of Yunnan in China, Kizen Zhao has been based in Tokyo since 2016. Though it’s only been a few years here, Zhao has an extensive and globally acclaimed portfolio when it comes to the art of photography.

It’s apparent that Zhao is meticulous when it comes to the entire process of his creations. From balancing the subject to the background to creating a visually palpable story, every aspect of his photographs seem gracefully orchestrated. Harmonious is arguably the best way to communicate his style. Kizen Zhao isn’t afraid to play with the rainbow either, skillfully using color theory as an integral tool, which amplifies the surreal feeling of his pictures.

Light, strobe, and shadow seem to be his partners in crime, and his talent brings the fantasy out of natural landscapes. Recurring themes seem to take root in traditional and ancient Chinese and Japanese cultures, which put emphasis on the relationship between nature and humanity, symbolism through minimalism and mindfulness, and serenity as a strength, but it would be wrong to say that Zhao doesn’t find inspiration in futurism.

His use of color, shape and bold makeup reminisce of abstract contemporary art, and this has gained him the attention of many high-profile magazines.

Working with the likes of Vogue, Nylon Japan, and plenty of celebrated Tokyoite talents, Kizen Zhao represents the space shared by newness and experience, illusion and sensation, as well as balanced energies.
