Picture This is a series by creatives, photographers, friends and lovers that belong to the worldwide Biancissimo family. In every episode of this series, one of these talented people will take us on a visual journey of their own. Daniel Nguyen aka Guschi is an old friend of mine and my hometown crew and I am following his skate, photo and Indonesia tales for a long time. For Biancissimo he will take us on a trip through Indonesia and shed light on all the people and moments he loves there.

Hi! I’m Daniel, better known as Guschi by my friends. Born in Germany and raised by my Vietnamese parents, I am currently studying Southeast Asian Studies with a focus on Indonesia. In February of this year, my studies sent me on a year abroad to Indonesia, and I still feel like I never want to leave this beautiful country.

Back in the day my father gave me his beloved rangefinder camera and taught me how to use it. Personally, a rangefinder is my perfect weapon for street photography: it is discreet, and a film camera will always capture the most authentic moments.

Since I arrived in Indonesia almost one year ago, I have been photographing and skateboarding more than ever before. The vast diversity of Indonesia’s archipelago (> 13,000 islands!) and its population continually give me so much inspiration to keep on shooting. Indonesia’s subcultures, as well as the openness and friendliness of the people, overwhelm me again and again.

The skateboarding culture in Indonesia is just incredible. The local skaters everywhere in Indonesia welcomed me so well that I feel most comfortable spending my time with them, whether it is just hanging around or skating at street spots and skateparks. Salaam to all my boys and girls out there!

These photographs are mainly shot in Java, but also in Bali and Flores. I always try to shoot the moment with as much authenticity as possible to let the picture tell the whole story.
