BAPE Goes Punk Goth - A Bathing Ape “To a New Decade”

A Bathing Ape, commonly known today as BAPE, is one of the most influential and recognized street brands to come out of Japan. The iconic Ape Head logo, the signature BAPE camo, and the vibrant shark hoodies, we've seen the brand everywhere around us.

The year 2003 marked the 10th anniversary of the brand, and also the birth of Billionaire Boys Club, Pharrell & NIGO's joint brand. To celebrate the brand's anniversary and show the possibilities of the Ape, the brand published an editorial titled "A BATHING APE - To a New Decade" in HUGE Magazine No.004 February 2004.

While most people associate with a very street image, the brand showed off its versatility in styling in this shooting. The shoot was done by a Japanese dream team, shot by Yasutomo Ebisu, styled by Tsuyoshi Noguchi, and hair & make-up by the late Katsuya Kamo. This power squad was able to show BAPE to the world in a completely new fashion, almost in a punk-gothic manner.

Contrary to BAPE's usual color-popping items, the items seen in the editorial are mostly black & white-based, with items like sleeveless hoodies, punk-esque tanktops, and ape head monogram shirts from the brand giving off rebellious vibes. Paired with skinny jeans, silver jewelry, and even a bikini, the edgy styling is something very refreshing from BAPE. Vivid glitter-blue lips, eyepatches, and an ape-head tattoo top it off.
