Katsuya Terada: The Doodle King

Katsuya Terada [born December 7, 1963], is a Japanese illustrator, mangaka and artist. He is also known as Rakugakingu [ラクガキング, "Doodle King"].

Terada was heavily influenced by both Manga and European comics. One of his biggest western influences was French illustrator and artist Jean “Mœbius” Giraud.

Terada famously contributed artwork for two Zelda videogames [The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening]. Similar to Mœbius, his work is heavily based on the line itself. He made an exceptional example of this with his live drawings at exhibitions where he would fill whole canvases using only a black marker.

His entire universe is based around science fiction, fantasy, hentai and mythology. He is also known for his book releases, which never fail to amaze. Amongst his most famous are “RakugaKing” [an impressive collection of sketches on stunning 1000 pages. It’s literally a sketch-bible], “Zenbu” [jap. “Everything” - which is just a collection of everything from sketches to completed works], “Erotic Engineering” [a collection of erotic art] and “Viva il Ciclissimo” [a collaboration with AKIRA’s Katsuhiro Otomo on their shared fascination for cycling.]

“Katsuya Terada showed me how much fun sketching can be. This feeling of fun quickly turned into respect when I realized that sketching is the basis for everything. Every idea manifests itself through a sketch and is then able to expand into an artwork piece. Terada was also mainly responsible for opening myself stylistically to the world of manga or the Japanese illustration world itself. And again, in the tradition of the grand-master Jean “Mœbius” Giraud, he showed me that an illustrator can be a fine artist at the same time as being a designer. I still wish I could learn Japanese more quickly so I can finally actually read and understand all the books I bought by him… “
