JOHNLAWRENCESULLIVAN Explores its Boxing Roots in its Collaboration with Everlast: A GATA Editorial

After interviewing our good friend Arashi Yanagawa last year, we have continued to be obsessed with his brand, JOHNLAWRENCESULLIVAN.

The designer is the epitome of an industry professional and maintains a keen eye on how he can continue to reshape the industry. It’s this drive and charisma that exudes from both the brand and him that has made us fall in love with both and makes having our sister brand GATA produce an editorial for them an absolute honor.

Whilst the charming Japanese designer is a paragon of challenging aesthetics, his background was not always in fashion. In the early years of life, Arashi was a professional boxer. It’s on this bedrock that the most recent JLS collaboration is built upon, coming together with Everlast. This partnership signifies a call back to Arashi’s youth and champions all the values that his brand embodies: strength and originality.

Whilst Arashi had challenged the norms of fashion in his early days, the designer continues to flirt with the unconventional by mixing his unique style of cutting-edge design with nuances of his past profession. The collaboration sees fitting products such as headbands, headgear, and sweats to round off a narratively sound story, but maintains a level of tastefulness only achieved through years of mastery of fashion.

The editorial, with creative direction from the ever-extraordinary GATA team, brings notes of mode style and embellishes them with brutal aesthetics creating a balance of beauty and bruises. And while still elegant, the shots have a raw edge to them only usually found within the ring between two fighters.
